Insider tips for Bonn

You can certainly explore a city within two days all on your own. Yet we collected some valuable insider tips to make sure you don’t miss the city’s specific characteristics and fully benefit from your short stay. Breakfast and art

The day’s most important meal should be the breakfast! We offer whatever your heart desires: an assortment of bread types and rolls, sausages, cheeses, cereals and fresh fruit, as well as a selection of tea and coffee specialities including café latte and espresso. Seasonal, local and fair-trade produce are particularly important for us. As you are perfectly set up for the day, it is time for art and culture: it is only a 15-minute-walk through the centre of Kessenich to the Bonn Museum Mile. At the Bundeskunsthalle, there are top-class temporary exhibitions. My tip: make sure to get up on the roof top to the beautiful terrace with its stunning view. In the summertime, it offers great events such as concerts or open-air cinema up there.

More glamorous than you may think: lunch in the „SPEISESAAL“

Why not stay for lunch? The Bundeskunsthalle’s restaurant “SPEISESAAL” (German for canteen), serves different specials every day, including delicious, Rhenish specialities. Don’t be deterred by the name canteen – this location is way more glamorous than you may think. The „SPEISESAAL“ won VARTA restaurant guide and SlowFood awards numerous times. If the weather is kind, you can take a seat in the museum’s inner courtyard. Right next door is the Haus der Geschichte (House of German History) so you can visit this venue right after your meal – an additional bonus!

A stroll through Bonn – and your sweet stopover

Get to know Bonn in the afternoon and stroll from the Musuem Mile towards the city centre, either via the Willy-Brand-Allee, past the Palais Schaumburg, König Museum and Hammerschmidt Mansion or walk along the Rhine. Either way will lead to you the Stadtgarten (Municipal Park) and the Alter Zoll (Old Customs), where you will find a beer garden in summer time and an ice skating rink in winter. This is the ideal spot for a stopover! Through the university’s archway, you will get into the city centre. In the pedestrian area, there are numerous shops waiting for your shopping spree. My tip: have a coffee and some cake at the Dehly & deSander patisserie in Thomas-Mann-Straße! It is a tiny place, but you will be served top-quality pastry – this place is called the “unscheinbare Kalorienschmiede”, meaning that it is an inconspicuous producer of finest calories.

Diner in the legendary Brauhaus

There is only one place when it comes to a proper-style diner in Bonn: the Bönnsch brewery! If the weather is kind, you can sit outside, if it is cold, you take a seat in the cosy brewery house. Enjoy traditional Rhenish dishes and the in-house brewed beer. This provides the perfect ambience to let your beautiful day of vacation come to an end.

Vaudeville and Open-Air

Bonn has a lot to offer when it comes to evening entertainment. Depending on the weather and season, I recommend visiting a concert at the Bonn Kunstrasen or at the Rheinaue Sommergarten during summer. Here you can listen to the sounds of classic music or rock in a picturesque countryside. Those who prefer the theatre should definitely see the GOP Vaudeville and enjoy a nightcap in their piano bar.
